Goals: Don't Let Setbacks Set You Back

Posted on June 22, 2011 at 11:59 AM

I've been doing fairly well with my goals.  I either kickbox or walk everyday--one day I shadow boxed.  I've been hitting my 1000 word mark too.   But this morning when I got up, I realized that at least half of the words I wrote last night were not going to work.

So today I'm cutting 500 words and rewriting.  Will I write 1500 words today?  Maybe.  I doesn't matter.  What matters is that I still love my novel, and I'm willing to throw away words to make it better.

A setback?  Perhaps.  If you can look at rain and see growing plants, then it's not a setback at all.  It's another move forward.  Thomas Edison once said when asked about his previous failed attempts to build the light bulb, "I have not failed. I've just found 10,000 ways that won't work."

My favorite quote by Mr. Edison expresses it better.  "Hell, there are no rules here - we're trying to accomplish something."

I'm off to accomplish something.  Ta for now.

Goals: Include the Things You Love

Posted on June 20, 2011 at 5:39 PM

Yes, I have lost my mind.  Yesterday was my dad's 82nd birthday. Consequently I ate ice and did not walk or kickbox.  I also only wrote about 500 words.  Darn.  But I had a great time at his party.

It is vitally important that you have a great time in life and include the things you love.  While I'm at it let's look at some other things I love.  I love Jonathan Maberry's book Vampire Universe.  It's an alphabetical resource of vampiric creatures from around the world.  Yes!  I think I've mentioned this book before, but it really is that good.

I love the Irish movie Once.  It's the story of a street performer who meets a girl, a musician from Czech Republic, and how together they pursue a dream.

I love my new Facebook author fan page. I love it so much that I'm inviting romance, urban fantasy, sf, & fantasy authors, you are invited to post book covers & blurbs on my Facebook page http://on.fb.me/krFyDI

And what I really love is Bit.ly that lets me shorten my links.

Let's recap:  I've talked about my goals, a great resource book, a fun movie, my new Facebook page and my author invitation (please, visit and Like me), and a website that offers a valuable public service.  There are paid services as well.

Tell me about your goals or what you love today.

Where I've Been?

Posted on June 18, 2011 at 11:47 PM

I've reached a word count of 71 thousand words, managing to write 1000 words a day.  I've kickboxed twice this week and walked on days I didn't kickbox with the exception of two days where it rained a lot.

I've been enjoying the True Blood marathon on HBO.  I've also been doing some research on assorted items.  Here and there I've been reading a book called Vampire Universe by Jonathan Maberry.  It's a reference book on vampires in cultures around the world.  It's a lot of fun and I've learned a lot.

Today is Father's Day!  Happy Father's Day!  It's past midnight and I'm still writing.  I'm on a roll.

Lightning but Missed the Eclipse

Posted on June 15, 2011 at 6:55 PM

:DI love lightning--very exciting.  I love the cool rain brings.  It's very inspirational for my writing.  It wasn't supposed to rain today, but whoosh.  Unfortunately I missed the lunar eclipse.  It couldn't be seen in North America.

Last night after coming home from kickboxing, I managed 1000 words.

Gerri is continuing to do a great job too.  How is everyone else doing?

On June 25th, over on Nights of Passion blog, Gerri is having romance author and marketing expert Jennifer Fusco taking about brand marketing.  They're going to give to one lucky commenter a free website analysis.  So if you're looking for suggestions on how to improve your website, drop by http://nightsofpassion.wordpress.com  on June 25th.

I am also excited that Poseidon's Catch and Mrs. Bright's Tea Room will be available soon in print.  Stay tuned for further developments.

Goals and Experiencing the Wonder

Posted on June 14, 2011 at 9:41 PM

:D  Well I managed 800 words yesterday (Monday) and I walked for 30 minutes.

Today I worked at the day job and then went kickboxing.  I still have writing to do.

As you know I also worked on Goal 3, which was packing promo and prizes for a convention.

Driving home from kickboxing tonight, I came up with Goal 4:  Experience the Wonder.  What do I mean by that?  As I was driving home, night swallowed the sky.  I drove into this cavernous mouth of midnight blue with thin gold lines.  Driving into night.  Pretty cool.

Goals on Monday--Change Can Happen

Posted on June 13, 2011 at 11:19 AM

I was under the weather for part of Saturday but that didn't stop me as soon as I felt better I was writing.  I wrote 3000 words, which roughly translate to 15 pages.  Didn't feel up to exercising.  Sunday was a day filled with church and family.  I did take a nap when I got home.  I wrote a bare 200 words.

Monday is a new day filled with promise.  I'll exercise shortly and then I aim to write a 1000 or more.  But right now I have a new goal three.

Goal three:  I'm packing promo materials and prizes into a suitcase for Authors After Dark.  I'm taking inventory at the same time to see what I have and what I still have to get.  I have T-shirts and two lap writing desks, book covers to sign at the ebook signing, glass bead bracelets, keychains, lavender umbrellas.  Beaded book thongs .

Buy I love doing this kind of stuff.  It gets you all excited for the convention.

Is Rain Good for Goals?

Posted on June 11, 2011 at 5:13 PM

Hooray for Gerri!  You're doing great.  I'll keep my fingers and toes crossed for your manuscripts.

I haven't been doing well on the exercise front with this rain.  But I did make my 1000 word mark last night and I've made it again today.  I'm trying to do a thousand more words before bed for a total of 2000 words.  Let's see if I make it.

There's also pushups and situps and crunches and other small area exercises I can do.  Hmm.  I will have to try today.

How is everyone else doing?

Living Up to Your Goals or Living?

Posted on June 9, 2011 at 11:30 PM

Last night I met my 1000 word writing goal.  I managed to write that much in an hour and a half  I had kickboxed earlier.

Today is another matter.  Life got in the way.  Migraine.  Then I went to my day job.  Then I came home to a storm.  Finally I'm online and my computer is a cranky bear.  I changed from browser from Internet Explorer to Firefox.

As for the health goal--I'm accepting that loss today.  Tomorrow's another day.  But I won't accept the same for the writing goal.  I'm writing now as soon as I sign off.

Keep going with the goals.  You can do it.  Each day is a new day for accomplishment.

Goals Can Take an Odd Turn

Posted on June 8, 2011 at 9:53 PM

Gerri, you're doing a great job.

Anyone else want to start posting their goals?

Today I kickboxed and did better than yesterday.  Goal 2 accomplished.

Okay, Goal 1 is in trouble.  Last night I fell asleep while trying to write.  Tonight I came home from the dojo and started writing for my blogs.  Remember I said that blog word count wouldn't count.  I've written 2 blogs for Nights of Passion and now I'm here writing.   Easily 1000 words between three blog articles.

What am I going to do?  I'm going to regroup and sign off.  The goal is to focus and write 1000 words on my novel before I pass out.  Wish me luck!

Defining Progress

Posted on June 7, 2011 at 10:23 PM

Glad, you're feeling better, Gerri.  Brava on the editing.

Some days everything doesn't get done.  Today was a heavy day job work day, errands, and kickboxing.  I came home whipped.  Now I'm writing, so we'll see how the count is but I'm not worrying.  If you look at the time, you'll see that I'm starting late.  We'll see what happens.  The object of every goal is to move forward.

I'm moving forward.  Gerri's moving forward.  You're moving forward.
